And they’re cheap, due to Canon’s move to RF mount. So many owner-operator freelancers rely on EF stills lenses. And this camera is aimed at precisely those owner-operators.

Adjust settings such as white balance simply by touching the WB indicator, or change the audio levels by touching the audio meters. Everything is interactive, so you can tap any item and instantly change settings without searching through confusing menus! You can also access settings such as the digital slate, to quickly add metadata to any shot. The new ATEM Mini makes it easy to create professional multi camera productions for live streaming to YouTube and innovative business presentations using Skype!

Happily, Blackmagic Design also added a port for an attachable electronic viewfinder (sold separately), which is handy for pulling critical focus in bright sunlight. My review camera included one and I highly recommend it. Third-party manufacturers make extender cables, so you can rig the EVF wherever it’s most comfortable (I like mine just off to the left of the camera). Audio also gets a much-needed boost with another mini-XLR jack to attach a second balanced microphone. The Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro’s LCD touchscreen now tilts up and down, which is great since I love shooting from a worm’s-eye view but don’t feel as enthusiastic about lying in the mud when framing a shot.

Features and specs

The “indie” means that, more often than not, I’m traveling solo with two cameras, lights, microphones, stands, and whatever else I deem necessary for the shoot. So when I started making two movies just before the pandemic, I chose to work with Blackmagic Design’s line of Pocket Cinema Cameras. They can capture beautiful footage, and they’re relatively small, lightweight, and remarkably inexpensive packages.

There is a huge market of new and used glass so you can probably find some good deals. This simplifies your workflow dramatically and reduces the amount of gear you need to bring on every shoot. It can be a faster workflow and is more ready for sharing.

Designed for Hours of Hand Held Use

There are plenty of good cameras out there that clearly only include video as a bonus feature, and are designed around photography. Take out all the features that are not necessary for a "cinema" camera like good AF, full frame sensor, miniaturized components (cinema cameras can be a little bit bigger), etc.. Plus, for starting filmmakers, good quality EF glass can be purchased at super prices from "off brands". With a 21 MP sensor, Many Canon users who want a video-centric Camera, can also use this as a backup to their main stills camera. Unless one is already heavily invested in the Sony platform, this camera is a no-brainer imo.

The LCD screen itself provides a surprisingly accurate indication of what your footage is going to look like, even when handling very high or very low frame rates. While this isn't especially unique, it's welcome, especially when compared to photography-minded cameras that sometimes aren't capable of showing the difference between high- and low-frame-rate video. The touchscreen interface is so convenient that I feel it's worth its own section. Full-frame sensors are comparable in size to 35-mm film.

Also, the single 1/4-inch attachment point for mounting a tripod plate is a bit fiddly; it should actually have two 1/4-inch threads, just like the camera itself. I still hope to test the lens together with its anamorphic attachment, but for now, this is just a short impression from my side after working with this lens together with the new camera. Saying this, I used the 3.5mm mini jack audio input, and to my surprise, the audio recording quality turned out to be great! I still remember the time when BM cameras had barely usable audio as pre-amps which were extremely noisy. Speaking of sound, I tend to believe that the maximum headphone output volume is not so great.

It also records HD H.264 proxies in real time making it easy to share media around the world in minutes! Blackmagic RAW is highly optimized, multi‑threaded, works across multiple CPU cores and is also GPU accelerated to work with Apple Metal, CUDA and OpenCL. This means your images always maintain unprecedented resolution and quality for color, keying, compositing, reframing, stabilization and tracking in HD, 4K or 6K. Media files work on all operating systems plus you can format media cards and disks in HFS+ for Mac and ExFAT for Windows.

The company claims it can power the camera for about 45 minutes, and while this bears out in my own experience, it’s shorter than I’d prefer. Blackmagic addresses this concern by selling a separate battery pack that holds two NP-F570s and cleverly mounts to the underside of the camera’s body. It’s a compact, efficient, and elegant all-in-one solution that even allows shooters to hot-swap their batteries in the field on long shoot days. The camera boasts an impressive 13 stops of dynamic range, with dual ISOs of 400 and 3200. The camera performs well across a wide range of lighting situations, from a room full of table lamps to my professional LED panels.

Blackmagic PYXIS features a logical design that puts important functions such as ISO, WB and shutter at their fingertips with both touchscreen and physical controls. A row of 3 customizable function buttons means customers don’t have to go hunting through menus on a tiny screen to find a command. The controls can even be locked to avoid accidentally changing settings during a shot or when the camera is out of reach on a rig. One of the biggest differences between cinema video cameras and more consumer based cameras has to do with the codecs, the dynamic range and the way the cameras handle noise. If you look at any cinema camera or another camera (DSLR and Mirrorless), from those that are into movie creation, they will always allude to the 'Filmic' property of the image that is produced.
